Dan Bardell: No way that Lucas Digne remains at Aston Villa if Marcos Acuna signs

We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…

Lucas Digne is set to depart Aston Villa this summer if the club secure a deal for Sevilla full-back Marcos Acuna, according to Dan Bardell.

Fabrizio Romano has reported (17 August) that the World Cup-winning defender had agreed personal terms to join Unai Emery’s side, with many speculating what this would mean for Digne’s future at Villa Park.

Digne himself has been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia, while RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins claimed (21 August) that the 30-year-old could return to his native France to join Nice.

Bardell claims that Digne would not be missed by Aston Villa fans and while he is not a poor player, he has not done enough in a Villa shirt to justify his price tag and the likes of Alex Moreno and Acuna are much more suited to Emery’s style of play.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think Aston Villa will look to sell Digne. He’s on big money per week and they’ll get a decent fee for him.

“They brought in a left-back from La Liga in Moreno who cost half the price and is on lower wages than Digne and he’s just so much more beneficial to the team.

“I’ve just been really disappointed with the signing overall and I think he goes to Saudi Arabia, which is looking likely that he will.

“There’s no way Villa are going in for Acuna if they don’t think that Luca Digne is going to go, so I just think Villa fans probably won’t be too upset by that trade-off.

“I don’t think it’s just me that feels these things.”

In other Aston Villa news, Bardell has revealed the changes in Villa’s transfer policy following the signing of Nicolo Zaniolo.
