Watford want to seal new transfer for Aston Villa striker Wesley

Aston Villa striker Wesley could be set to join Watford on loan in the Championship for the coming season, as the Hornets look to replace the outgoing Ismaila Sarr, according to the Daily Mail.

The Brazilian forward joined Villa in 2019 for £22m but failed to make a genuine impact, only scoring six goals in 26 appearances in all competitions and has spent the last few seasons on various loan moved hoping to rediscover some form.

Wesley suffered a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out of action for a lengthy spell, before spending time at Club Brugge, Internacional and Levante on loan, but hasn’t been able to find his goal scoring touch once more.

Writing in the Mail’s Transfer Confidential, Simon Jones said: “The Brazilian is in discussions to join the Championship side on loan. Wesley, who cost Villa £22m from Bruges, has had three spells on loan since he returned to action in 2021 after a lengthy spell out following a severe cruciate ligament injury.”

Watford believe the forward will be able to help fill the void made by Sarr’s departure, with the Senegalese forward set to sign a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 side who have beaten off plenty of Premier League interest.

Last chance saloon

It feels as though most outside of the most die-hard members of Villa’s fanbase would have forgotten that Wesley was even still their player, such has been the time since he graced the turf at Villa Park.

His potential move to Watford could be his last chance to have a real impact on the English game, with his Villa contract expiring at the end of the upcoming season, he could put himself into the shop window.

His stock has fallen rapidly since his arrival in the Premier League and the sort of clubs he was linked with back in the summer of 2019 won’t be likely to come knocking once more, even if he takes the Championship by storm.

On a personal note, it would be nice to see a player who had such an unfortunate injury rediscover what made him so desirable all those years ago, but the turbulent culture at Watford isn’t conducive to consistency, as fellow Villa forward Keinan Davis found out last season.
