Aston Villa can sell Lucas Digne despite fitness record - Injury Expert
We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at Aston Villa...
Lucas Digne’s fitness may not be enough for Aston Villa to retain his services ahead of next season, claims Dr Rajpal Brar.
The injury expert recently reacted to Alex Moreno’s [link to pubbed article] situation with him likely to miss the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey claimed [15 June] that the Villans will be open to selling Digne despite Moreno’s injury.
The Frenchman, 30, suffered a shoulder injury in January 2023 but has relatively been fit and available for Unai Emery’s side.
Speaking about his extended absence, Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, told Villa News, “I certainly understand holding in to Digne as cover for Moreno or as a starter if he can’t return and even then, to not more undue pressure on Moreno to rush back but the key here might be if Aston VIlla can find a cheaper alternative then he could certainly be shown the door as Digne is on significant wages, especially for a non first XI left-back.”
Digne moved to Villa Park in January 2022 and became a first-team regular when Steven Gerrard was the manager.
However, Emery did not see him the same way and he was restricted to the role of being a bench player.
He made 10 out of his 28 appearances off the bench last season and played 90 minutes just once from January till the end of the season.
Digne’s still got three more years left on his contract at the club but appears to be linked with an exit this summer.
In other Aston Villa news, a first-team ace has emerged as the “Master of the Dark Arts” for Unai Emery and has become the club’s most underrated player.
