Weston McKennie headed to Premier League with 'huge' reputation amid Aston Villa transfer speculation
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton doubts Weston McKennie will be a worthwhile signing at Aston Villa amid speculation linking the Juventus midfielder with a move to B6.
Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport reported on 15 July (page four) that Aston Villa are interested in signing the 24-year-old USA midfielder, who’s not been training with the main group at Juventus in their pre-season preparations.
McKennie spent the back end of last season on loan at Leeds but the former Schalke man really struggled to impress the Elland Road crowd as they were relegated from the Premier League.
Although Hutton admits McKennie, who played at the World Cup in Qatar with the USA, is a high-profile player, he doesn’t see how he’d get into Unai Emery’s midfield with the options the Spaniard currently possesses in the West Midlands.
Speaking to Villa News, Hutton said: “He’s not for me personally.
“I think the players they’ve got at the club at this moment in time are better.
“McKennie went into Leeds with a huge reputation from Serie A and I was really looking forward to seeing what he gave.
“I know it’s difficult to move to a different league and a different culture; I’m always one for giving players time. But I just didn’t quite see enough from McKennie.
“For him to move to Villa, with the competition there, do I see him playing every week? Not at this moment in time.”
McKennie played 19 times for Leeds in the Premier League last season, appearing just three times in a winning team.
Villa have already signed Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer on a free transfer from Leicester City.
