Aston Villa: Jacob Ramsey could be set for a big 2023/24 Premier League campaign

Jacob Ramsey was an integral part of Aston Villa’s seventh-placed finish in the Premier League which earned them European qualification for the first time in over a decade.

After being named Aston Villa’s young player of the season for the 2021/22 campaign, Ramsey took his performances to another level in 2022/23.

He was recognised for his brilliance by scooping the Premier League Academy graduate award – following in the footsteps of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 22-year-old scored six league goals and provided seven assists, which are incredible numbers on the surface, but it is a deeper dive into the stats which reveals just how special this young talent is.

According to stats provided by FBREF, Ramsey made 3.21 progressive carries per 90 in the Premier League last season, which puts him in the 91st percentile for midfielders in the league in regard to this particular statistic.

What is particularly impressive is his expected assists of 0.24 per 90, which puts him in the 95th percentile of midfielders in the league and ahead of top players such as Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.

As well as this, he had an impressive average pass accuracy of 81.9% and also recorded some solid defensive numbers, making 2.36 tackles and 1.64 blocks per 90.

These numbers prove that the midfielder is showing maturity beyond his years with some of his goals having come against the likes of Liverpool at Anfield and Tottenham and Newcastle at Villa Park.

His ability to make a late run into the box is second to none, showing Lampard-esque awareness when it comes to arriving in the box to score a chance.

If Ramsey continues on this trajectory, and with the opportunity to shine in Europe next season, who knows how high the player’s ceiling could be?

In other Aston Villa news, the Villans are keen on a response in their pursuit of a Real Madrid star.
