Fabrizio Romano shares update on Aston Villa bid to sign Marco Asensio as offer tabled for Real Madrid star
Fabrizio Romano claims Aston Villa have tabled an “opening bid” to sign Marco Asensio with the attacker on his way out of Real Madrid.
Asensio, 27, is set to leave the Bernabeu after nine years as a Galactico, winning three La Liga titles, one Copa Del Rey, four FIFA Club World Cups and three Champions Leagues in his time in the Spanish capital.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on 30 May, Romano reported that Villa are now “pushing to get an answer” from Asensio as soon as possible as Unai Emery looks to sign his fellow Spaniard.
Asensio will be available as a free agent this summer, meaning that there’s interest in him from elsewhere.
Romano says that Paris Saint-Germain have also made an approach to sign the Mallorca-born Spain international while clubs in Italy are also in the hunt.
Aston Villa manager Emery, 51, has already been in direct talks with Asensio in a bid to beat the competition to his signature [BirminghamLive] but it now remains to be seen where he’ll play next.
While PSG will no doubt be able to offer guaranteed silverware, Champions League football and, potentially, more money than Villa, the Villans are also attractive in the fact that they have a Spanish manager, are playing in Europe next season, play in a more reputable league and could also offer big wages.
Asensio has scored 12 goals and supplied eight assists in 50 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid this season.
If selected, he’ll play his final game for Los Blancos on Sunday (4 June) when they face Athletic Bilbao at the Bernabeu in the last game of the La Liga season.
Asensio wasn’t in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the 2-1 win at Sevilla at the weekend and he only managed a 19-minute-long substitute appearance in the league game before that against Rayo Vallecano.
Ancelotti also played Asensio for just one minute in the Copa del Rey final victory over Osasuna on 6 May.
In other Aston Villa news, this fan favourite is now ready to light up the European stage.
