Jacob Ramsey cements ‘one of our own’ status at Aston Villa, joins club legends after win over Tottenham
Aston Villa bounced back from back-to-back 1-0 losses with a hard-fought 2-1 win against Tottenham on Saturday (13 May).
It was a much-needed three points for Unai Emery’s side, whose standards had slipped in recent weeks following a stunning run of form.
The win against Ryan Mason’s men has put them back into contention for European football, with young midfielder Jacob Ramsey playing a key role throughout the afternoon at Villa Park.
His versatility was on show once more with his wide midfield role, where he was tasked with both defending and attacking against a team also chasing European football.
But it was the latter area in which he shone most, taking just eight minutes to find the back of the net as he latched onto a pull-back from Leon Bailey to fire past Fraser Forster.
The goal saw him reach 10 goal contributions for the current campaign, with five goals and five assists.
With six goals last time out, he now has 11 Premier League goals to his name, the fourth-most of any Aston Villa player in the competition before turning 22, after Gabriel Agbonlahor (25), Darius Vassell (16) and Luke Moore (14),” according to Aston Villa Statto.
The fact those three players were all strikers makes Ramsey’s feats even more impressive. Moreover, all of his goals this season have come at Villa Park, with Aston Villa Statto branding the youngster as “one of our own” thanks to this feat.
As mentioned, Emery also tasked the youngster with chipping in defensively, and Ramsey did not disappoint, making two tackles and one interception throughout the match, according to SofaScore.
At just 21, Ramsey is on course to make his 100th Aston Villa appearance against Liverpool on Saturday (20th May), a remarkable achievement for someone so young.
In other Aston Villa news, one Villa gem faces an Emery waiting game after a late flourish, with his future hinging on the future of Philippe Coutinho.
