Aston Villa predicted to sign three new Spanish players with behind-the-scenes deal close to completion
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Aston Villa have been warned to not buy too many Spanish players in the summer by Alan Hutton amid news a new Spanish-based scout is being hired.
Express & Star journalist Matt Maher reported on Twitter on 21 April that Alberto Benito is set to arrive as the newest member of Villa’s scouting team with the former Real Betis scout heading to the West Midlands.
Unai Emery has already signed one fellow Spaniard in Alex Moreno, as well as Spanish-speaking Colombian striker Jhon Duran.
It seems as though Villa are going to continue trying to add players from Emery’s home nation and while Hutton is all for it, he doesn’t want to see too many arriving as it could have a detrimental effect on the team’s dynamic.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there were two or three Spanish players coming in because ultimately, you revert back to what you know,” Hutton told Villa News.
“Unai Emery knows that league very well, he knows a lot of the players and he will feel he can get the best out of them.
“But I’ll always feel that you shouldn’t have too many of one nationality like Spain or France or whatever.
“I’ve been a part of it when we had a lot of French players and it became a bit clicky where they would all chat, sit with each other and have dinner away from everybody else. And that’s not me blaming anybody because it goes both ways as you have to integrate everybody.
“For the morale and for the group, I don’t think you should have too many from one nation, in my opinion.
“If I went to Spain and there were six Scottish guys, where am I going? That’s where I’m going and you don’t really integrate with the other players. You want to learn the language, learn the culture and have new experiences.
“That’s what you want to happen so you just need to be careful with the dynamic of the changing room.”
Villa were linked with Real Valladolid’s right-back Ivan Fresneda on Friday [90min].
In January, Mundo Deportivo reported that the Villans were interested in Real Sociedad’s former Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino.
In other Aston Villa news, concerns about Ollie Watkins have been examined by a BBC Sport pundit.
