Ollie Watkins has 20-goal a season potential at Aston Villa under Unai Emery - Ty Bracey
Ty Bracey believes Ollie Watkins can become a 20-goal-a-season striker at Aston Villa under the guidance of Unai Emery.
Watkins netted his 10th and 11th goals from his last 12 Premier League outings during Villa’s 3-0 rout of Newcastle at the weekend, further heightening calls for an England call-up under Gareth Southgate in the process.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that the 27-year-old is due to be handed a bumper new contract at Villa Park, a deal that would make the striker one of the club’s highest earners alongside the likes of Tyrone Mings and Emi Martinez.
Watkins currently has two years to run on the five-year deal he signed when joining Villa from Brentford for £30million in September 2020.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Aston Villa influencer Bracey said that the new deal that Villa are currently planning would be the perfect way to stop clubs snooping for Watkins’ services this summer, while admitting the Englishman could definitely reach 20-goals-a-season under Emery.
“I definitely think Watkins can reach 20 goals a season under Emery,” he said.
“If he carries on, he could potentially hit 20 this season, but I think the 20-goal mark is a great target for him next season.
“We know he can perform under Unai, and especially well in this new system, so I’m hopeful he can reach this level in an Aston Villa top.
“I think he has found the form of his life, started performing under Unai and looks like he is going to get a new contract, so I think that will ward the big-four clubs away from a transfer in the future.
“I don’t think the contract is there for that reason though. I think he has earned it through his performances this season, but if he signs it, it also has the impact of stopping those big clubs from coming knocking in the summer.”
During the turbulent reign of Steven Gerrard this season, Watkins scored a meagre two goals and recorded just two assists from 12 matches.
However, since Emery arrived in the West Midlands, the former Brentford striker has contributed towards 15 goals from 17 matches, leaving him fifth in the race for the Golden Boot and just a single goal behind Manchester United star Marcus Rashford.
In other Aston Villa news, the club might have found the heir to James Milner after what Unai Emery did against Newcastle.
