Aston Villa have reportedly made a “fabulous” offer for Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, and his match-winning performance against Rennes in the French Cup could be his last, according to L’Equipe.

The former Arsenal man has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League, to play under his former manager at the Emirates, Unai Emery.

According to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs [11 January], the Villans are currently working on signing the French international midfielder this month, with the Ligue 1 outfit wanting as much as £44m for the 23-year-old.

The midfielder has enjoyed another eventful campaign at the Stade Veledrome and proved the crucial difference, as he scored the winner in Marseille’s Round of 32 tie against Rennes on Friday [20 January].

And according to French media outlet L’Equipe [20 January], that game could well be his last as the Villans have reportedly made a “fabulous” offer for the French international star.

If Aston Villa get this deal done, Guendouzi will represent a marquee signing for Emery, as he looks to shape his new side into his image.

The 23-year-old has propelled his game to new heights during his time at Marseille, and is certainly ready for a return to the Premier League, following his difficult spell at Arsenal under Emery.

Villa already possesses some quality midfielders in their arsenal, with summer signing Boubacar Kamara thriving under Emery alongside Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn, and adding Guendouzi to the mix means the club could arguably possess the league’s best midfield outside the top six clubs.

It seems as though Emery is desperate to get his man this month, and it’s a signing that could well propel Villa’s game under Emery to new and improved heights.
