Finance Expert: Aston Villa would likely be among clubs to push back against any new European Super League plans

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa

Dan Plumley has insisted that Aston Villa would likely be among the clubs to oppose any new plans for the European Super League if they were to emerge again.

Research has found that European leagues could lose up to 55% of annual revenue from the likes of TV rights should it go ahead after failing the first time around.

The Finance Expert admitted that figures such as that gives clubs a huge stick to go out and say “absolutely not” based on what they have been handed.

“I think that the majority of clubs outside of the big six would always be lobbying against this in whatever format,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“I think that’s the big figure in regards to that figure, it is likely we’d see a decline in revenue. If the clubs also remain in their domestic leagues and they can’t just put out their reserves, then it becomes no different to the Champions League.

“Other clubs will lobby against it but if there is a scenario where it stays the same and it is the European Super League against the Champions League, domestic leagues will be hit less than 55%.

“This is a huge stick to dangle in front of the other clubs and say, if you’re going to lose half of your TV revenue, and they say absolutely not.”

Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are looking to build something special at Aston Villa and push the club forward in the Premier League, something other plans go against.

Losing a huge chunk of revenue would immediately halt that, as clubs are given large sums each year.

Thankfully, the “other 14” in the Premier League are all likely to join together, not just Aston Villa, in opposing any new attempt to get this moving forward, so these so-called bigger clubs have to put up and deal with it.
