Alan Hutton: Emi Martinez must improve distribution for Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.
Alan Hutton has suggested Emiliano Martínez must improve his distribution under Unai Emery with the Aston Villa boss looking to play out from the back.
The Argentine has been in good form for Villa in the 2022/23 season but was at fault for Brighton’s opening goal in their last Premier League fixture.
Hutton feels the 51-year-old could look for a new goalkeeper to fit his style of play if Martinez doesn’t improve his ability to play out from the back.

“There’s no getting away from the fact that he wants to play out from the back,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.
“They’ve given away goals doing it but they still continue to do it so that’s his philosophy, that’s his way of playing and if you don’t fit that bill, then ultimately he will bring someone in who can do it.
“Martinez has been outstanding with some of his saves keeping Villa in games. Playing out from the back is something he’s got to get used to and get better at.
“There’s no getting away from that and everyone has to be comfortable, and from what I’ve heard, Emery wants them to be patient on the ball. Pass it about, have touches, and not just go back to front.”

It would be a big call from the Villa boss, with Martinez currently starring for one of the pre-tournament favourites at the World Cup in Qatar.
At the moment a departure does look unlikely for the 30-year-old with his contract currently until the summer of 2027.
In other Villa News, Alan Hutton claims Cameron Archer could leave Aston Villa on loan.
