Alan Hutton impressed with Aston Villa flexibility under Unai Emery

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton has been impressed with Unai Emery’s tactical flexibility with the Spaniard showing he’s not afraid to change formations during his time with Aston Villa.

The 50-year-old has played variations of 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3 in the early weeks of his tenure at Villa Park, which has seen his side pick up maximum points in the Premier League.

Hutton highlighted how the Spaniard also changes where his players operate, with John McGinn playing two completely different positions in recent weeks.

“It’s obviously going to take time to see how the team is going to shape up with Emery coming in. He can play a 4-4-2 and he can change it about,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“You’ve seen John McGinn playing at left mid for talking sake against Manchester United and then the next game against Brighton he was on the right-hand side, so I think it’s going to take time.

“John has been out of the team for a few weeks and he looks hungry and aggressive to go and show the manager what he’s capable of. Moving forward I think everybody gets that new lease of life to go and show their worth.”

It’s been the perfect start for Emery, who has dragged Villa up to 12th in the Premier League and quashed any relegation worries for the moment.

The next few weeks will be absolutely vital for the Villa boss to get to work with his players on the training ground and really implement some of the formations and tactics he wants to employ in the second half of the season.
