Alan Hutton: Lucas Digne lucky not give away penalty in Aston Villa win v Brighton

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton feels Aston Villa were lucky not to give away a penalty in the second half of their 2-1 Premier League win over Brighton.

Lucas Digne’s second-half challenge on Solly March went unpunished after VAR official Jarred Gillet had cast his eye over the incident.

Hutton has suggested the Villa full-back was extremely fortunate, with March getting to the ball before the Frenchman.

“I think he was lucky, the first couple of angles I wasn’t 100 per cent sure but I went back and I think it was the third one where you can see March gets there first,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“Digne is going to clear the ball, it’s not like he is trying to foul him, he just gets the timing a little bit wrong and when you’re out by just a fraction you’re going to give fouls away.

“I think Aston Villa were a little bit lucky to get away with that one on Sunday.”

It’s safe to say Villa have been due a slice of luck with this season, and it certainly came on the South Coast on Sunday (13 November).

The battling performance from Unai Emery’s side has got his reign at the club off to the perfect start, with his side currently in 12th position in the league.
