Jamie Carragher raves about ‘vital’ Ashley young after Aston Villa win v Brighton

Aston Villa recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday afternoon and Jamie Carragher reserved praise for Ashley Young’s role.

Unai Emery made it two wins from two Premier League matches on Sunday after a brace from Danny Ings gave Aston Villa all three points against Brighton.

It was a resilient performance from the Villans, who were forced to flood their box and defend in the final few minutes. Young made a number of crucial blocks in the final 10 minutes and Carragher piled the praise on the 37-year-old.

Speaking via Sky Sports (November 13, 3:57pm), Carragher said: “Aston Villa have nullified them. This would be a vital three points.

“That role of Ashley Young has been vital. Two or three times now he’s averted the danger just using his experience.”

Experience

Emery looked towards Young with 20 minutes to go as he looked to tighten up his defence and add some much-needed experience to the team.

Young’s maturity and experience proved vital as he remained composed and fended off a number of Brighton attacks. He may be well into the twilight years of his career, but he’s still a very useful asset for Villa and Emery knows it.

Emery also deserves credit for his management of Young. He can’t cope with a full 90 minutes but is a great impact substitute from the bench, especially when Villa need to defend a lead.

Expect the Spaniard to turn towards Young much more often throughout the season if Villa need to kill a game off and survive a late barrage.

It was a huge three points for Villa, who now sit 12th and just three points from European qualification spots. With the World Cup break now here, the squad can rest up and return fully motivated to climb even further up the table in the second half of the season.
