Alan Hutton: Unai Emery would have wanted League Cup progression for Aston Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton believes Unai Emery would have wanted progression in the League Cup after Aston Villa lost 4-2 to Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag’s side eventually ran out comfortable winners with goals from Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay enough to send the Red Devils through to the fourth round.

Hutton has suggested that Villa should’ve been looking to go as far as they can in the cup competitions, with the World Cup break giving them a much-needed rest.

“He would’ve wanted to do well in the cup games,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“Getting off to a good start is something that’s needed and getting the fans onside. With the World Cup break coming up Emery should be looking to play his strongest side whenever and wherever he can.”

The Villans now face Brighton and Hove Albion in their last fixture before the World Cup break, with a win extending the gap to the bottom three to five points.

Emery will be looking forward to having a month to get to work with his players on the training field without the pressures of results immediately hanging over his head. A win over Brighton will constitute an excellent start to life at Villa Park for the Spaniard.

Let’s hope Emery’s side continue their good recent form on the South Coast on Sunday afternoon (13 November).
