Alan Hutton: Jacob Ramsey good enough to play variety of positions for Aston Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park.

Alan Hutton feels Jacob Ramsey has the ability to play a number of positions after his man-of-the-match performance for Aston Villa in their 3-1 win over Manchester United.

Ramsey scored, assisted and won the free kick in the lead-up to Lucas Digne’s goal, whilst operating in a slightly more advanced and wider role.

Hutton believes the 21-year-old’s intelligence means he could play in a variety of roles for Unai Emery’s team.

“As a midfielder [his best position], he has the ability to get up and down the pitch, probably as a number eight,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.

“That being said he’s intelligent so he could probably play out wide, a ten or a number six. He can do it all to be fair to him. He’s just growing and developing week after week under these different managers.

“I thought he was excellent at the weekend. The own goal he could do nothing about, it was shot from a distance, hits his side and then goes in.

“His overall display was outstanding and it was a great finish for such a young player, and he’s only going to improve from now on.”

Ramsey has been one of the shining lights for Villa in the 2022/23 campaign and could potentially be in with an outside shout of being called up to Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for the World Cup.

The 21-year-old will be looking to build on his season tally of two goals and two assists as Emery’s men face Manchester United in the League Cup.

In other Aston Villa news, former Steven Gerrard assistant Michael Beale has gone on record to rule out a return to Villa Park amid a previous managerial vacancy.
