Unai Emery: Aston Villa players were ‘angry’ around Manchester United clash

Unai Emery couldn’t have asked for a better start to his Aston Villa tenure after he secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Villa Park.

Emery enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Aston Villa after goals from Leon Bailey, Lucas Digne and Jacob Ramsey secured his first win in the Villa Park hot seat.

The team started brilliantly and looked revitalised under the Spaniard, and Emery has since revealed that his players were feeling “angry” in the lead-up to the match.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Emery piled praise on his players and revealed their emotional build-up to Sunday afternoon’s clash.

“The players showed that they have been applying themselves every day before the match,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“They were angry. They were feeling lots of emotion around the match.”

Start of a new era

After the frustrating final few weeks under Steven Gerrard, the entire Aston Villa squad looked to vent that anger and frustration in a brilliant performance against Manchester United.

The Villans started brilliantly and looked well worthy of their lead. Emery deserves credit for making such a huge impact in such a short time.

The Spaniard had hardly any training sessions to implement a game plan, but Villa certainly stuck to the plan they were given and it worked as intended.

He looks to have given a new lease of life to the likes of Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey, who both looked blunt under Gerrard.

It’s only the start, and expectations shouldn’t go too wild, but it’s certainly a result that Villa fans will rightfully get excited about.

With another clash against Manchester United coming up midweek, Emery will look to do the double over the Red Devils and start Villa on an exciting cup run.
