Finance Expert shares verdict on Aston Villa compensation to Steven Gerrard as sacking confirmed
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa
Dan Plumley has insisted that Steven Gerrard will definitely have received compensation after being sacked by Aston Villa in the past week.
The Finance Expert did admit, however, that clubs have been negotiating severance pay into contracts recently, rather than being caught out and having to pay out an entire contract.
Unai Emery has since been appointed at Villa Park, with the board not messing around in their next step to remain a Premier League club and move forward.

“You can’t see a way where there isn’t going to be a compensation fee,” he exclusively told Villa News.
“The only other thing is we’re now more aware is compensation is negotiated as part of the deal at a set price, rather than just winding down the length of the contract. I’m not saying that is the case here, we don’t know as we’re not involved in the conversations, but there will always be compensation fees paid to managers, some are now being signed up front and would be a smaller fraction compared to if you were to just terminate.
“The other thing is irrespective of that payment, consider the risk of relegation from the Premier League which is going to lose you £60million overnight so it is that kind of risk of reward again.”

Christian Purslow and the board look to have made their minds up quickly to move on after weeks of disappointment under Gerrard in the Premier League.
It may have cost compensation, but as Plumley mentions, it would be way less than the £60million clubs instantly lose by dropping into the Championship.
Time will tell how well this goes.
