Tyrone Mings slammed by Sky Sports commentator for ‘horrible header’ that handed Chelsea early goal v Aston Villa

Tyrone Mings made a huge error for Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon, with the centre-back heading the ball right into Mason Mount’s path for Chelsea’s opener.

Aston Villa endured a nightmare start to Sunday’s clash against Chelsea, with Mount scoring after just six minutes to put Steven Gerrard’s side behind.

Mings was entirely to blame for the goal, with the centre-back misplacing a header back to Emiliano Martinez which allowed Mount an easy finish.

Sky Sports commentator Rob Hawthorne slammed Mings for his decision-making while covering Sunday’s match.

“What a horrible header by Tyrone Mings,” said Hawthorne via Sky Sports (16 October).

“Looks to be a huge misjudgement by the man who lost Aston Villa captaincy at the start of the season.

“In front of the England manager as well.”

From bad to worse

Mings was already having a tough time at Villa Park, so a huge error in front of the home fans was something he definitely wanted to avoid.

The Chelsea match seemed like a huge chance for Gerrard’s side to make a statement, but Mings’ mistake left the team with a huge mountain to climb early on.

Plus, as mentioned by Hawthorne, Gareth Southgate was in attendance at Villa Park and will be left disappointed by what he saw.

With the World Cup just a few weeks away, Mings has basically waved goodbye to any chance of a call-up.

Only Mings knows whether the stripping of his captaincy is the reason behind his poor form, but it does seem that the 29-year-old has been negatively affected by Gerrard’s decision.

It’ll be tough for Mings to come back from his mistake and prove fans and Gerrard wrong. But if he truly does want to prove he’s captain material, he’ll need his leadership and experience now more than ever.
