Aston Villa ace Jacob Ramsey not ready for England despite ‘top class’ Jamie Carragher verdict

Jamie Carragher does not yet believe that Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey is ready to play for England despite being impressed by the 21-year-old.

The homegrown Vilan was not under consideration by Gareth Southgate when the senior Three Lions squad was selected for the UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany but he was included in the Under-21s side.

England were beaten away in Italy on Friday and have been subsequently relegated from the top flight of the competition for the next cycle with plenty of criticism aimed at the squad selection.

Ramsey was suggested among many players as someone who could have been in Southgate’s large squad for the two matches but Carragher is not yet convinced that he is ready.

“None of those players would get in the team,” he said on Twitter in response to one suggested list of candidates. “Right now they are good PL players nothing more. (Ramsey will be top class in the future).”

Patience

Ramsey is just 21 years of age and he is still only in his second season of being a regular at Villa Park so there is no need to rush him into the cauldron of international football to have the entire country’s eyes on his back.

Carragher is right to suggest that right now is too soon for him to be included because only the very best of talents get into the squad at a young age.

Aston Villa

Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham are those talents for Southgate right now and the likes of Wayne Rooney before them too who are all way above the level of the 21-year-old right now.

One day, he will get that call-up and hope to keep his place in the Three Lions for many years but the only thing that would happen right now is a spectacular fall.

Steven Gerrard will be more than happy for Ramsey to remain at Aston Villa during international breaks to have a well-earned rest and some individual coaching that could come in handy.

In other Aston Villa news, one of the Villans’ standout young talents has put pen to paper on his first professional deal at Villa Park.
