Alan Hutton: Points more important than performances for Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton feels that getting points on the board is the most important thing for Aston Villa at the moment after their scrappy 1-0 win over Southampton.
Jacob Ramsey’s goal on the stroke of halftime was enough for Steven Gerrard’s side to build on their impressive point against Manchester City.
Hutton believes that the improved performances will come for the Villans after a subpar start to the season at Villa Park.
“I think that’s the main thing [points on the board] at the moment is the results for Aston Villa,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.
“Obviously everyone wants to have amazing football but a draw against Manchester City and a 1-0 win over Southampton is just about putting points on the board.
“Yes they want to progress up the league and when you look at it they’re only a point off the top half even though they’ve not had the best start.
“They’ve got Leeds and Nottingham Forest which they will be targeting but getting points on the board is the most important thing at the moment.
“Playing well comes secondary for Steven Gerrard.”

Despite the early season pressure on the Villa boss, a win could take his side into the top half of the table and widen the gap on the relegation zone.
A trip to Leeds is next up with Gerrard looking to replicate his side’s last performance at Elland Road which saw Villa run out comfortable 3-0 winners.
