Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne drafted into France squad to replace Theo Hernandez

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digned has been called up to the France squad for the upcoming Nations League matches ahead of the World Cup.

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez was initially picked by Didier Deschamps but his pulling out opens the door for the former Everton ace.

With this being the last international break before the World Cup, the 29-year-old will certainly use this as an opportunity to secure his berth in the travelling squad to Qatar.

Via Twitter, the official France Football account wrote, “Lucas Digne replaces Theo Hernandez (right adductor injury).”

No international break

Villa fans would’ve been relieved to see Digne not being picked for the France squad after they went into the international break on the back of a 1-0 win v Southampton.

This season has not been ideal in more ways than one and the last thing they would have wanted for their main left-back to risk himself on international duty.

However, their joy has certainly been shortlived as he’s now set to join up with the rest of his French counterparts and possibly play close to 180 minutes of football over the coming days.

We’re hoping that he returns unscathed as Ludwig Augustinsson is not quite ready to start numerous Premier League games in a row just yet.

He could be decent for the odd fixture or two, but Digne is the undisputed number one for Steven Gerrard who will certainly be left fuming if anything happens to him over the course of this week.
