Steven Gerrard wants to 'build' Aston Villa midfield around starlet Jacob Ramsey

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard wants to “build” his team’s midfield around exciting youngster Jacob Ramsey.

21-year-old Ramsey has found his form and put on an electric display against Southampton on Friday evening; scoring the winner and only goal of the match.

The youngster certainly has a bright future but will need to build on his terrific start to the campaign if he wants to be considered among the Premier League’s best.

Speaking to the Express and Star Gerrard stated that he wants to “build” his midfield around Ramsay and believes the starlet has all the attributes to reach the highest levels of football.

“He’s got a lot of development and a lot of growing up to do but we can build a really good team around him,” said the Villa boss.

“I know people want to talk about the World Cup but I don’t think that’s fair on him. From an international point of view, there’s no rush. He will get there. But he’s only just broken through, he’s only just becoming a regular.

“We are asking him to perform different roles in different games. That helped me grow and develop as a player and that will help him, too. I’ve got every confidence this kid will become an elite player and an international. But it’s difficult when he keeps getting assists as he did against Manchester City and scoring important winners.

“My job is to make sure there’s not too much noise around him so we can let him develop, grow and evolve naturally. If he keeps going as he is, he will get there. He’s a wonderful kid, really humble. He hangs onto every word of advice. He knows there are areas of his game he can improve because, in footballing terms, he’s still a baby and we love him.

“I love working with him and myself and my staff will give him every bit of attention he needs to get there.”

Crucial cog.

Ramsey has been transformed by Gerrard into a useful cog in the Villans first XI and is starting to prove his worth to the team this season.

The youngster has stamped his authority in the LCM role in Gerrard’s 4-3-3 and seems to be flourishing under the guidance of the former Liverpool captain.

Now playing as a focal point in the squad, Ramsey is complimented perfectly by John McGinn, who does much more of the dirty work for the team.

Ramsey’s intelligence in the game already looks to be far beyond his years and this is more than exciting for Villa fans, who will be hoping to see him in the claret and blue for many seasons to come.

Hopefully, Ramsey can start to add more goals to his game, this is an attribute that every midfielder needs to have in the modern game.

It remains to be seen if Gerrard will be able to keep onto his young talent, there’s no doubt the league’s bigger teams will come hunting for Ramsey’s signature if he continues to impress.
