Time for Aston Villa to make Douglas Luiz sign new deal before its too late

Aston Villa are going through a turbulent phase in the early part of the 2022-23 campaign as they have won just one out of the first six matches.

Those results have left the side in 17th position in the league table which is simply not good enough considering how much has money been invested in the squad.

One piece of good news recently though was the club’s stance on not selling midfielder Douglas Luiz, who was the subject of interest from Arsenal on transfer deadline day [Sky Sports], with the club rejecting three bids for the Brazilian.

Time to reward

Recent reports in the media suggest that the Gunners are now focused on signing Palmeiras young Danilo Oliveira in the January transfer window after missing out on Luiz.

The news will be great for the fans as they would not want to lose a player of the 24-year-old’s quality at any cost but there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

It is also important to remember that the Brazil international is in the final year of his contract and it is just about the right time to push and make him sign a new deal, especially with news emerging that his biggest admirers from the recently concluded transfer window are looking elsewhere.

Luiz has been a Villa player since the summer of 2019 when he moved from Manchester City in a deal worth £15million.

Since then, he has represented his current club in 117 matches across all competitions, scoring seven times and providing eight assists in the process [Transfermarkt].

If there was ever a time to pull out the red carpet and convince Luiz to put pen to paper on a new deal, it’s now.

In other Aston Villa news, £30million worth of shares have been pumped into the club to ensure any debts can be cleared heading into the meat of the season.
