Ray Parlour: Steven Gerrard must have seen something about Aston Villa skipper John McGinn
Ray Parlour has suggested that Steven Gerrard must have seen something about John McGinn, and that’s why he made him the Aston Villa skipper.
The former Arsenal defender added that it doesn’t mean Tyrone Mings won’t have a big role to play.
Mings can still boss the defence, and that shouldn’t be any issue for the club.

“I always think it’s in the training ground that you pick your skipper. You can see the leader in your squad straight away,” said Parlour on TalkSPORT.
“I think that maybe Steven Gerrard has seen around the dressing room where he is a big influence, and he made the decision. That won’t affect anything.”
Spot on
Mings is a very good player and a top professional. He is still an important player for this club, and he won’t mind who is having the armband or not.
In football, a manager relies on more than one captain in the side, although there’s one designated skipper.
For instance, Jurgen Klopp has said many times that Virgil van Dijk is a leader at the back, and he commands the area. The same thing can be said about Mings.

He can focus on his game, and try to raise the level of his performance.
McGinn is a quality player who leads by example. It can well happen that Steven Gerrard must have noticed shades of him in McGinn, as he was himself a top-quality midfielder and a great Liverpool skipper during his playing days.
It really doesn’t make any difference. Mings can still boss the defence, and earn the same respect from his teammates. He can still be a leader at the back and continue to deliver inspiring performances.
