Alan Hutton: Steven Gerrard makes big but right decision to name Diego Carlos Aston Villa vice captain
We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland defender Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa.
Alan Hutton believes that Steven Gerrard made the right call to make new Aston Villa signing Diego Carlos the vice captain at the club.
Having stripped Tyrone Mings of the captaincy, Gerrard said that he has four leaders at the club with John McGinn being the main captain.
Since signing from Sevilla, Carlos has featured extensively in pre season and has been named as one of the vice captains.

The Brazilian comes to Villa Park with years of experience of playing with and against some of the best players in the world.
Discussing this exclusively with Villa News, Hutton said, “Steven Gerrard has been in football a long time and he has obviously seen enough to know he’s a leader.
“He’s also well respected in the dressing room, to be given that role.
“He looks commanding to me. He’s barking out orders and putting people in line.
“It’s a big decision, but ultimately the manager sees him day in and day out and knows he’s more than capable of that role.”
Carlos has played at the senior level for over 10 years and that may have factored into Gerrard’s decisions.
He is one of the most experienced players in the team and is expected to make his debut for Brazil after making their squad.
In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
