Alan Hutton: Aston Villa must tie Douglas Luiz down to new deal

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland defender Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa.

Alan Hutton is delighted that Douglas Luiz is reportedly in contract talks with Aston Villa amid all the rumours surrounding his exit.

The Telegraph reported that the Villans were keen on getting the Brazilian to extend his current deal at Villa Park.

Luiz has been a mainstay at the heart of midfield and has featured regularly under Steven Gerrard.

Discussing this situation exclusively with Villa News, Hutton said, “Yeah I’d like to see him stay.

“I think he’s done a good job last season and the season before.

“Steven Gerrard is an admirer of him so he’s playing him in pre season and is in his plans.

“It’s been difficult for him, over these last six months, because there has been chat over him moving elsewhere so it can turn your head a little bit.

“But I think contract talks are good for the club. They’ve got ambition and want to keep their star players so hopefully they can get it done.

Spot on

Villa cannot afford to lose a player of Luiz’s calibre and if they want to go that next step they’ve got to retain their key players.

The Brazil international clearly fits that bracket and together with John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara can form a trio for this season.

Despite losing their first game to Bournemouth, there’s no reason for the Villans to make any harsh moves and try overhauling the team.

They must see what Luiz’s demands are and if they’re not too unreasonable, agree on the terms and move on with this saga.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
