Matty Cash outlines European ambition for Aston Villa

Matty Cash wants to achieve European football with Aston Villa this season and believes the Midlands club will be flying when the season starts this weekend.

Steven Gerrard’s side finished 14th in the 2021/22 Premier League season after a disappointing second-half to the campaign.

However, with Gerrard starting his first full season in charge, Cash believes that big things can happen at Villa Park.

As quoted by The Birmingham Mail on Thursday 4 August, Cash said: “Everyone’s working hard trying to achieve [European football].

“As we all know, the fans and the club deserve it and we’re the people that can change it and can do it, so we’ll be doing the best we can to do it.

“As I said, we look in really good shape so, hopefully, when the season starts, we’ll be flying, yeah”

Huge season

This is a really important season for Villa to place themselves amongst the top half of the Premier League after a change of management in the 2021/22 campaign.

Gerrard having a full preseason with his squad will put Villa in a good position to start the season on a good note and significantly improve on their 14th place finish last season.

It is crucial for Gerrard to get off to a good start with the jury still somewhat out after a mixed campaign after his arrival from Rangers last season.

Furthermore, the Aston Villa manager has clearly been backed in the transfer market which could mean he is given less time and patience by the board should things not go to plan.

It’s important not to forget that Dean Smith was also supported by the board and relieved of his duties after a couple of disappointing results.

With the amount of money and signings that Villa have made, there should be no excuse for finishing outside the top ten.
