John McGinn sends message after being appointed as Aston Villa captain
John McGinn has delivered his first message after being officially appointed as the new captain of Aston Villa for the 2022-23 season and beyond.
The Scotland international has been given the armband by Steven Gerrard, who has taken the decision upon himself to take that responsibility away from Tyrone Mings.
McGinn admitted it was a “massive honour” to get chosen for the role, and looks forward to the new season which starts with a trip to newly-promoted Bournemouth.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, McGinn was clearly ready to get going with the new Premier League season finally round the corner.
“It’s a massive honour to be named Aston Villa captain,” he wrote.
“To be given such a privileged position within this historic club is one that I’m extremely proud of. Can’t wait to get started next weekend.”
Honour.
When you think about players who give their all for the shirt every single week, you instantly think of McGinn in the middle of the park.
Gerrard will see shades of himself in the bulldog, as he can get forward and find the back of the net, but also can get stuck in when needed too and doesn’t shy away.
That is likely part of his thinking too, having that leader in the middle of the park when he can directly influence everyone around him, something Mings could do from the back.
There was big pressure on the shoulders of Mings last season, and every little mistake led to him being questioned by those in and outside the club.
With some favourable fixtures to kick off the new season, let’s hope McGinn and the boys can get off to the perfect start, we’re due a huge year.
In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
