View: Can Aston Villa defender Tyron Mings bounce back from captaincy removal?

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has removed the captaincy from Tyrone Mings but can the England international bounce back from this?

The 29-year-old was stripped of the armband in favour of new captain John McGinn, and this removal casts doubt on his future at Villa Park.

Mings did however respond well to the announcement, tweeting his support for his new captain and pledging to succeed at Villa Park.

Writing on his personal Twitter account Mings said: “For me, this is not about John or I, its about what is right for Aston Villa.

“I have no issues with the manager’s decision and I have loved leading this team.”

Can Mings bounce back?

If there has been one thing Mings is known for it is his leadership qualities and maturity, so it is no surprise to see how he has reacted to the news.

The 29-year-old centre-back was vocal during the Black Lives Matters protests in 2020, as well as defending his England teammates Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho after they were racially abused in the aftermath of the Euro 2020 final.

The former Ipswich and Bournemouth defender also clapped back at Home Secretary Priti Patel after she tried to offer her support for the England national team, despite her controversial views and policies.

Aston Villa

He has undoubtedly been someone who was always stood up for what he believes in and has been a model professional for Aston Villa since signing for the club in 2019.

His performances have dipped and he has not been as consistent as he once was however, so this decision can help him focus on his football and recover his past form.

In addition to this, if his tweet is anything to go by, Mings has taken the decision well and is dealing with it maturely which shows respect to his manager, his new captain, and the club.

In other Aston Villa news, the club have secured the signing of teenager Ewan Simpson.
