Tyrone Mings will be upset to lose Aston Villa captaincy – Gabby Agbonlahor
Gabby Agbonlahor believes Tyrone Mings will be upset after losing the Aston Villa captaincy but also insisted it won’t change much at Villa Park.
The club confirmed on Wednesday (27 July) that John McGinn will be the club captain for the upcoming season, with Steven Gerrard stripping Mings of the armband.
Former Villa striker Agbonlahor believes the news will be disappointing for the central defender.
He told talkSPORT on Thursday 28 July: “I think he will be a bit upset because when he became captain at Aston Villa you could tell he enjoyed it.
“The talking from the back, the armband, and it’s a proud moment but for me it doesn’t change much.
“He’ll still be shouting at McGinn to get back and ordering his teammates about.”
Focus on his game
It’s fair to say that Mings has been in somewhat indifferent form over the past couple of seasons, both for club and country, and perhaps the captaincy was an added burden that he simply didn’t need.
McGinn has always been a consistent performer for Villa and is a combative and aggressive player that can somewhat drive the team forward.
Furthermore, Gerrard was also captain of Liverpool and a central midfielder so it may just be his preference to have a man in the middle of the park as his captain choice.

It will be interesting to see if McGinn’s performance now differs from his usual high standards with the added responsibility of being captain.
Changing the captaincy is a bold decision by Gerrard but could certainly be one that reaps rewards in the future.
Gerrard isn’t afraid to make decisions that could impact the mood amongst his squad but Mings’ reaction looks to have headed off any controversy.
McGinn certainly does seem like captain material but only time will tell if it was the right move by the Villa boss.
In other Aston Villa news, Cash’s own performance against Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils perfectly highlighted the good and the bad he has to offer.
