View: Ludwig Augustinsson to find it tough to displace Lucas Digne from Aston Villa XI

Aston Villa may have signed Ludwig Augustinsson on a season-long loan from Sevilla but are going to find it difficult to find a regular place in the team for him.

The Villans signed Lucas Digne from Everton in January and he has done a decent job since his move to Villa Park.

Steven Gerrard liked his full-backs at Rangers to play high up the pitch and he’s certainly got that in the Frenchman and abandoning that for a new signing does not make sense.

Unless the Swedish defender has been brought in as a backup, it makes the move to the Premier League a tad baffling.

If Gerrard plans on dropping Digne for him then it makes sense in principle but why would he want to fix something that’s not broken?

While full-backs are judged by their attacking output these days, their defensive numbers also clearly show that Digne is the superior player.

Even on the offensive side of things, there appears to be a very clear winner and it’s blatantly obvious that Digne has been the better player.

Add to that, he’s also got the experience of playing in the Premier League and was Everton’s best player for the past few years.

If the Swede is content being a backup then so be it because we do not think Gerrard decides to play him over the Frenchman.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
