View: Aston Villa incoming Ludwig Augustinsson a solid addition to Steven Gerrard squad
Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Sevilla left-back Ludwig Augustinsson and the Sweden international could prove to be a dependable addition to Steven Gerrard’s side.
It has been revealed by The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano (via Twitter 10 July) that Villa are closing in on a loan deal for Agustinsson with the option to buy.
Augstinsson has been at Sevilla since the summer of 2021 after leaving Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.
The 28-year-old played 19 times for Sevilla in LaLiga in the 2021/22 season and could well prove to be a solid signing for Villa.
Augustinsson won’t rip up many trees in an attacking sense for Villa, but can certainly be relied upon defensively.
The 28-year-old will add experience to Gerrard’s ranks as well as be a good rotation option.
As per Wyscout, Augustinsson has excellent duel statistics, with the left-back averaging nearly seven per game (6.78) with a success rate of 63%.
Furthermore, the Swede averages 3.45 interceptions per 90 minutes which indicates his defensive awareness is one of his strong attributes.

He will be an excellent option for Gerrard to use if Villa find themselves under a lot of pressure in a particular match.
Despite only managing one assist in the 2021/22 season for Sevilla, he isn’t scared to put a cross into the box.
The 28-year-old averages 3.5 crosses per game with a 40% success rate, which could be useful for the likes of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings to feed off of.
This is a clever signing by Gerrard, which will allow the Villa boss to rotate his squad and adapt to various situations that may arise this season.
In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
