Ashley Young likely to extend Aston Villa deal as talks progress – Fabrizio Romano

There is a “very good” chance that Ashley Young will extend his deal at Aston Villa, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 36-year-old is out of contract at Villa Park on the 30th of June after signing a one-year deal with the Lions back in 2021.

Discussions are ongoing between the pair but the Sky Sports journalist insisted that the feeling is mutual between the player and club as they look to stay together for the 2022/23 campaign.

Romano said on his personal Twitter: “Talks in progress between Aston Villa and Ashley Young with very good chances to continue together next season.

“Discussions ongoing but feeling is mutual.”

Great news.

There are undoubtedly some people questioning this move by the Villans which is understandable.

Steven Gerrard is undergoing a massive rebuild at the club and keeping a 36-year-old around would hardly be seen as improving the squad.

Especially with the finances available at Villa Park in conjunction with the pull the Villa boss has.

However, maintaining the identity of the squad is hugely important. You can’t just sign several players and expect them to understand the club’s identity and gel immediately.

That’s where Young comes in. The Premier League veteran will be able to come in and show the new boys what it means to play for the Lions by leading by example.

With his wealth of experience, he will be one of the go-to guys for the new boys as they look to settle into life in England.

It isn’t just in the dressing room where Young can make an impact, he still has so much to give on the pitch too otherwise surely the Villans wouldn’t be extending his deal.\
