Jamie Carragher: Everton relegation will be worse than Aston Villa

Jamie Carragher believes that it will be a bigger deal if Everton get relegated from the Premier League rather than Aston Villa.

The former Liverpool captain and a boyhood Evertonian does not see the Villans as a big club in comparison to the Merseyside outfit.

Villa last faced relegation from the top flight in 2016, but are safe from the drop this season with Steven Gerrard steadying the ship.

In his Telegraph column, he wrote, “If Everton are relegated, they will be the biggest club in Premier League history to suffer that dismal fate.

“When you package all the elements which constitute being a ‘big club’ – status, history, resources, size of fanbase and culture of the city in which a team operates – Everton’s fall would be the most colossal and catastrophic. Aston Villa and Newcastle United fans may argue differently.

“Villa were once European champions and were established in the Premier League for 24 unbroken years when they went down in 2016, so their relegation was huge.”

Bias

Carragher’s bias is there for everyone to see.

Just because he lives in the city, Everton getting relegated will be a big deal for him.

However, Villa have proven in the past that they’ve got a significant and cherished history.

Recently, they have invested a great deal in their squad and have better players and a better manager than Everton.

The Toffees have been horribly run and their absence from the Premier League will not be a big deal.

Villa, on the other hand, will certainly fancy themselves finishing in the top half and maybe even challenge for Europe next season.

In other Aston Villa news, the club are set to intensify Philippe Coutinho talks in the coming weeks.
