Unai Emery and Ollie Watkins among the winners and losers of Aston Villa's transfer window so far

Aston Villa have been through a topsy-turvy summer transfer window.

Unai Emery led Villa to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League last term.

The Spaniard also brought silverware back to Villa Park, thanks to a famous Europa League triumph over Freiburg.

But, with Villa still needing to toe the line with financial parameters agreed with UEFA the window has been frustrating with Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers sold to Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Alejandro have all arrived, though, and here Villa News looks at the winners and losers of Villa's window so far.

Winner - Alysson

Brazilian youngster Alysson was signed from Gremio back in January for a deal that could eventually be worth more than £10million.

The 20-year-old was only used sparingly last season, making just three Premier League appearances in total.

But the £117m deal that took Rogers to Chelsea might just have opened up a window of opportunity for the forward.

It could be that Unai Emery looks to blood Alysson more this season, and there may be more minutes available with Rogers sold, and Jadon Sancho not signed after his loan last season.

Winner - Ian Maatsen

Villa News previously covered reports that Lucas Digne was likely to leave Villa for PSG.

While that move has yet to be formally ratified, it looks only a matter of time before Digne heads back to France to act as back up to Nuno Mendes.

Ian Maatsen made 30 Premier League appearances last season, but only 17 when he was named in the starting XI.

Even if Pervis Estupinan joins from AC Milan as expected, Maatsen will have the opportunity to nail down the left-back starting role as his own once Digne departs.

Loser - Ollie Watkins

Ollie Watkins has himself been linked with an exit throughout the window amid reported interest from Turkey.

It feels unlikely a sale will be sanctioned now given Rogers and Tielemans have been sold.

But Watkins is a striker who thrives on service, and losing their best creative force in Rogers, and a maestro like Tielemans is bound to harm that.

The 30-year-old striker will have to hope that others like Garnacho can step up to the plate to provide him chances.

Loser - Unai Emery

In fairness to Emery, it has never been lost on him that Villa's modus operandi is to sell and re-invest to keep competing.

And when you think of the sales that have been made under his watch, the Spaniard has done a remarkable job at Villa Park.

But it will certainly hurt to lose the sort of quality that Villa have in Tielemans and Rogers.

He has proven he can cope with adversity in the past, but no one can hide the fact it is a blow to lose two top talents to top-flight rivals.
