Aston Villa will have an option to extend Marco Asensio's loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain should they wish to in the summer, according to David Ornstein.

Writing for The Athletic (2 February), Ornstein reported that with Asensio set for a medical at Bodymoor Heath on Sunday, Villa could have the Spaniard on their books beyond the end of this season.

Villa and PSG have agreed a straight loan deal for Asensio to make the move to England for the rest of the campaign, but unlike their move to bring Marcus Rashford to Villa Park, there is no option to buy.

However, Villa will hold the option to re-sign Asensio on another season-long loan deal come the summer if the 29-year-old justifies such a decision in the next three months.

Marco Asensio could be set for extended Aston Villa spell

Villa closing out the winter transfer window with the signatures of Asensio, Rashford and potentially two further additions in defence, would be a huge statement as they prepare for the season's business end.

While the Lions will have an option to buy Rashford in the summer for around £40million, the possibility of having Asensio in the fold for another 12 months gives Unai Emery even more guaranteed firepower.

The departures of Diego Carlos, Emi Buendia and Jhon Duran have been some of the headline-making transfers in the past month at Villa Park, but Emery's side are now making huge moves the other way.

Asensio's form in his two seasons at PSG has been hit-and-miss due to injury, but given the way in which Emery has revitalised the entirety of Villa Park, he'll be hopeful his compatriot can have a similar effect.

Rashford's arrival will certainly grab the headlines as the transfer window approaches its climax, but getting Asensio on loan – possibly for the next 18 months – could prove to be the more shrewd move.
