How Aston Villa could seal transfer agreement for Juventus' Teun Koopmeiners
Aston Villa may not be done adding to their central midfield department this summer.
Unai Emery has already bolstered Villa's engine room with the additions of Joao Gomes and Johan Manzambi respectively.
However, with Amadou Onana's injury and the potential for Ross Barkley to leave Villa Park still, some further cover could yet be needed.
Teun Koopmeiners may be able to provide the Villains with that, as the 28-year-old could be on his way out of Juventus this summer after an underwhelming two years in Turin.
The 32-cap Netherlands international joined Juve from Atalanta in the summer of 2024, and has made 89 competitive appearances for them since.
But with Luciano Spalletti searching for serious improvement in 2026-27 after Juventus' sixth-placed Serie A finish last term, the experienced midfielder may no longer be in his plans.
Who are Aston Villa competing with to sign Teun Koopmeiners?
Villa News covered reports from summer 2023 that detailed Aston Villa's interest in signing Koopmeiners then.
As such, it would seem he's a player who has long been admired at Villa Park, but perhaps never quite being a priority target.
However, with the aforementioned midfield signings made, Villa chiefs might've spotted an opportunity to finally land Koopmeiners' signature this summer, and it could be a very cost-effective deal too.
A report from Corriere dello Sport has claimed that Juventus are wary of losing money on Koopmeiners, who it was widely reported they paid Atalanta a fee of around £46million two summers' ago.
Because of that, it's claimed that a loan move could be granted for him, and that Manchester United as well as Aston Villa are both analysing his profile and weighing up moves.
But what sort of player is Koopmeiners, and has his time at Juventus actually been as disappointing as some may think?
Why Koopmeiners' standout trait could make him vital to Villa
Let's start by answering that first question regarding the type of player the Dutchman is.
Koopmeiners is an extremely versatile player. He's a central midfielder by trade, who can and has played as a six, eight and even as a 10 whilst with Juventus.
Also during his time in Turin, he's operated in central defence, as a right winger and even up top as a centre-forward, and it's this ability to plug just about any hole in the team that makes him such a handy player to have.
Given the injury problems Emery has faced at Villa Park in recent campaigns, Koopmeiners would be a player he'd surely place great value in having too.
As for his performances for Juventus, he started 18 of his 33 Serie A games in 2025-26, and 23 of his 28 during his debut 2024-25 campaign.
Koopmeiners wasn't able to register a single goal contribution in the league last season, but as per FotMob, he did complete 90.2 per cent of his passes and averaged 1.39 shots as well as having created 0.84 chances per 90 minutes.
The context behind Koopmeiners' disappointing time in Juventus stems from the fact they signed him off the back of a 15-goal and seven-assist 2023-24 season with Atalanta.
That kind of form is incredibly hard to repeat, and so the fact he's only scored seven total goals for Juve in two years has been a big reason for the frustration towards his signing.
However, Koopmeiners is a good, solid player, and one that could be extremely valuable to Aston Villa due to his versatility and considerable Champions League experience.
