Unai Emery will be tearing his hair out at the summer transfer window Aston Villa are having.

Villa have a brilliant 2025/26 campaign, finishing fourth in the Premier League and winning the Europa League with a fantastic 3-0 win over Freiburg in the final.

Frustratingly, despite their achievements, Villa continued to tread the line in terms of meeting the parameters of financial restraints.

It has meant another summer where Villa are having to look at making player sales before they can look at adding to the squad.

There is still around six weeks left to do business, so it is not exactly time for panic stations yet.

But there will be some concerns, and here Villa News has ranked Villa's squad from strongest to weakest as things stand.

Aston Villa forwards ranked - 8/10

Villa are probably lacking some depth in the forward areas, and Emery would definitely like some more bodies in the final third.

That said, of the options currently available, there is some real quality there.

Morgan Rogers' future remains shrouded in doubt, but Villa are determined to keep hold of him.

If he does remain, then Villa have one of the best talents in the Premier League in their ranks.

Ollie Watkins, who has also been the subject of reported interest from Fenerbahce, remains a top operator at this level as well.

Emi Buendia and Tammy Abraham are solid squad options, while Evann Guessand is back from a loan spell at Crystal Palace, though it remains to be seen if he has a long-term future at Villa Park.

What we know and don't know about Aston Villa's transfer window: Emery's priority and Martinez exit news

Aston Villa goalkeepers ranked - 7/10

Once upon a time, this would have been a much higher rating given Emi Martinez had such a golden period.

The Argentina World Cup winner, back in the semi-finals with his country, is still a big character, and a top performer.

But there is a feeling that his star has been on the wave just a touch, though the fact he has now won a trophy with the Villans entrenches him as arguably the club's greatest ever goalkeeper.

There are reports that Martinez could depart this summer, having almost joined Manchester United last year, with Juventus said to be interested.

That would leave Villa needing a replacement, as Marco Bizot and Joe Gauci are next in line of the current options and both are only back-ups in truth.

Aston Villa defenders ranked - 6/10

A ranking of 6/10 may seem harsh, as there is some very good talent in Villa's defence.

But Lucas Digne is expected to depart for PSG, and there is not much back-up to Matty Cash on the other side.

Ezri Konsa is a standout performer, and a crucial part of England's squad, while Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings are solid options.

Victor Lindelof is on the books as a decent back-up too, but you get the sense there are improvements that could be made to defence, so for now they score a 6/10.

Aston Villa midfielders ranked - 4/10

The big blow, as Villa News wrote on Monday, is the fact Youri Tielemans is set to leave Villa for Manchester United.

With Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara injured, it leaves Villa looking mighty short in midfield.

John McGinn continues to lead by example, of course, and Johan Manzambi will hopefully complete his switch to Villa Park in the near future.

But right now, with Tielemans on the way out, and injuries causing issues, midfield looks a real problem area for Emery.
