Aston Villa have had a slow start to the summer transfer window.

Uncertainty over Villa's ability to comply with financial regulations continues to be a hindrance to their plans.

Indeed, the overriding feeling seems to be that Villa will have to sanction a big-money exit before bringing players into the building.

That obviously represents a blow given Villa made it back into the Champions League for the coming campaign, and proved their pedigree by winning the Europa League.

But Villa have proven adept at navigating tricky transfer waters in the past, and there is confidence work can be done as the window moves on.

Here's what we know and what we don't know about Villa's transfer window thus far.

What we know: Aston Villa face Morgan Rogers battle

One of the biggest things Villa could do this summer is keep hold of prized asset Morgan Rogers.

The attacking midfielder is currently away representing England at the World Cup, but Villa could face a battle to retain his services.

Premier League champions Arsenal are heavily interested, though Villa are holding out for a £130million fee.

Chelsea and Manchester United have also said to be monitoring Rogers, though the fee is likely to put off both parties.

Villa are determined to keep hold of Rogers, but it is going to be a hard-fought battle to do so.

What we know: Unai Emery has a clear priority

Villa will obviously be looking for improvements across the board, but there is one area that needs attention.

Unai Emery will be looking to improve his options in forward areas, particularly on the flanks.

Leon Bailey is still at the club, but this time last year he was deemed surplus to requirements and was shipped out on loan.

Evann Guessand is back from a loan spell at Crystal Palace, though it remains to be seen if he has a future at Villa Park, while Jadon Sancho's loan is now over.

Jarrod Bowen and Ibrahim Mbaye have been linked with a move, while Marcus Rashford has even been tentatively tipped with a return.

What we don't know: Is Emiliano Martinez going to leave?

It was not too long back that Villa were staring down the barrel of losing first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The World Cup winner wanted to join Manchester United, but that move failed to materialise.

However, now 'Dibu' is the subject of interest from Juventus and there is a sense Villa make take the last chance to get a fee for their long-term number one.

The fact that Villa are being linked to the likes of Zion Suzuki, Robin Risser, Viktor Johansson, Guillaume Restes, and James Trafford, suggests they are making contingency plans if Martinez does leave.

What we don't know: Is Ollie Watkins on his way out?

One surprising report that does the rounds in recent days is Ollie Watkins being linked with the exit door.

Turkish outlet Sabah claims Watkins has agreed a three-year contract with Fenerbahce, who now need to agree a deal with Villa.

It would be surprising if Villa were to allow Watkins to leave, given he is their main weapon up front.

A sale will inevitably need to be sanctioned somewhere, and it remains unclear if Watkins will be the one to be sacrificed.
