Aston Villa fans have to be ruthless with Emi Martinez as transfer possibility looms
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is continuing to be mentioned in transfer discussions.
The Argentine spent the vast majority of last summer angling for a move away, before eventually staying at Villa Park.
This would frustrate both Villa fans and Unai Emery, with the latter cutting a frustrated figure at the end of the transfer window.
Martinez has been an integral cog since joining the Villans in 2020, naturally attracting interest due to his performances.
This summer, the experienced shotstopper has been linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus, with Inter Milan also mentioned as a possible destination.
And with this in mind, Villa fans may just have to be ruthless and wish for a swift resolution in whatever is going to happen over the summer months.
Aston Villa cannot afford Emi Martinez repeat as 2026-27 gear-up starts
At the end of the 2024-25 term, the 33-year-old appeared to have said an emotional goodbye to the B6 outfit.
After a summer of interest from Manchester United, Martinez would instead remain in the Midlands, with United choosing Senne Lammens of Antwerp.
This caught Villa off guard, as no replacement had been secured if he left, and there was little time to arrange one with the saga dragging on until the final days of the window.
With the Villans returning to the Champions League, while they aim to continue fighting domestically, boss Emery will want the majority of his squad to be set in stone for pre-season.
Last year, they were left scrambling, not knowing whether a goalkeeper was required or not - this simply cannot be the case once again.
If Martinez is to leave, he will always be remembered fondly at Villa Park, but how he does leave will define just what level of fondness that is.
Could Aston Villa already have a replacement lined up?
Positively, signs have pointed to the position between the posts as an early target for the Europa League champions.
Across the last week, Borussia Monchengladbach shotstopper Moritz Nicolas has been mentioned as a potential target, while Parma's Zion Suzuki was linked with a switch to Villa Park on Wednesday.
At 23, Suzuki in particular would be an interesting choice, having impressed at domestic level in Serie A and gained a reputation for his ability with the ball at his feet.
Given his age, Emery may be looking to future-proof the side, with the majority of his squad being the same as the one he inherited in 2022.
This could start from the back, and while a Martinez exit would hit hard, it could be exactly what is needed to kickstart a needed refresh in the Midlands.
