John McGinn couldn't hide his emotion as Aston Villa drew to Brentford on Saturday.

The skipper was coming into the Premier League clash off the back of a packed out international break.

He only missed three minutes with Scotland as it wasn't until the 87th minute of their final game before he was substituted off.

That didn't go down well with Unai Emery, but he still trusted the midfielder to start at Villa Park.

There was maybe an element of tiredness to his performance, with his frustration clear to see.

McGinn took aim at referee Pawson as his annoyance threatened to boil over with Lee Hendrie sitting up to take notice.

Why did John McGinn rage at Craig Pawson?

There was an air of agitation from the Scot throughout the entire 90 minutes in B6.

That was hardly a surprise with the bitty nature of the encounter between to forward-thinking sides.

It was McGinn who arguably let that impact him the most as he was often seen voicing his anger.

That all came to ahead late in the first-half as a free-kick was given against the Villa captain.

It came despite El Hadji Malick Diouf being down on the ground with the ball between his ankles.

McGinn did very little wrong and didn't hold back in his reaction for the decision, as Lee Hendrie noticed as co-commentator on the Premier League World Feed.

He said: "I can see why John McGinn is absolutely furious with Craig Pawson. There was a similar sort of situation where he had the ball between his legs and he's trying to say, 'What's the difference with that one?'

"Diouf's got the ball between his legs and is literally protecting it now allowing him to get anywhere near it. That was an angry John McGinn."

That summed up his performance for the most part as we assess how the captain was impacted at Villa Park.

The thing is with the 31-year-old, you can always rely on him for a big moment.

It looked like he had provided exactly that when his deflected effort found the corner to put the Villans 2-1 up.

That has changed the general feeling around his performance as it had been very patchy and pretty poor at times.

McGinn misplaced seven passes, failed to complete a single dribble or cross while being dispossessed three times.

That isn't made any better by his six duel losses and the fact he commited two fouls.

His goal was a bright spot as he made one of his three shots count, but it wasn't his greatest afternoon.
