Victor Lindelof nearly lets himself down as Swedish media pick out 'deadly' moment vs France
Aston Villa fan favourite Victor Lindelof faced mixed reviews as Sweden lost to France on Tuesday.
The centre-back once again lined up for his nation with the captains armband at the World Cup.
Graham Potter clearly trusts him, but that wasn't enough to get his side over the line in the round of 32, suffering a 3-0 defeat.
Facing Les Bleus was always going to be difficult and it proved to be exactly that as Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola found the net.
Michael Olise was also electric and left the Villa defender with almost no chance of stopping them.
That still didn't stop Lindelof from nearly causing himself a massive problem before his side were dumped out of the World Cup.
Victor Lindelof nearly ended season in worst possible way vs France
The 31-year-old has done so well to turn opinion around since joining the Villans on a free transfer.
He was a major part of the Europa League glory in Istanbul before he jetted off to North America for the summer.
The tournament has ended earlier than he might of hoped, but that was expected after facing arguably the best team in the World.
Things nearly finished in the worst possible way when Lindelof's sliding tackle on Olise cold have ended with a red card.
He ultimately got away without a booking, but it still left Swedish outlet Expressen concerned.
They described the challenge as a "deadly tackle that could very well have resulted in a red card."
That nearly ruined his chances of proving himself against France, but he did go on to put in a positive shift.
Fotboll Skanalen was impressed that he "kept his composure at the back" while picking out his ability to "get the ball forward offensively".
Svenska Fans echoed that and showed love for the defender's body language and wouldn't blame him for the result.
They wrote: "Unfortunately [he] did not succeed today. Was put under heavy pressure and had to work significantly more than desired."
Lindelof is clearly well-respected in his homeland and proved himself against the world's best.
The numbers behind Aston Villa star Lindelof's showing vs France
The result certainly wasn't what the Villa man would have wanted, but he isn't entirely to blame.
He still managed to clock up five defensive actions as his four clearances and one tackle made a difference.
The defender also won three duels as he looked to keep the elite force of France quiet for as long as he could.
Lindelof still managed to show why he's so well-liked at Villa Park as he maintained a 96 per cent pass accuracy and a 100 per cent dribble success rate.
That shows how he can play at a top level against the best in the world, even if his side ultimately struggled to compete.
