Unai Emery has some serious explaining to do as Evann Guessand flops in Aston Villa loss vs Bayern

Unai Emery saw his Aston Villa side lose 2-1 to Bayern Munich in Hong Kong on Friday.

The Villans' penultimate pre-season game ended in defeat after goals from Kim Min-jae and Luis Diaz on 7 August.

Joao Gomes got one back for the Lions in the 83rd minute, but it was nothing more than a consolation.

Villa struggled to pose any attacking threat for most of the game, with Evann Guessand starting up top.

The 25-year-old forward partnered Brian Madjo up front before being replaced in the 67th minute.

Last summer, the B6 club agreed a £30million package deal to sign the Cote d'Ivoire international from OGC Nice, and the Spanish manager must be held accountable for that decision.

Guessand has been poor for Villa during pre-season after returning from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Against Bayern, the Ivorian ace played as the right-sided central attacker, recording 23 touches, six of which were unsuccessful, as per Sofascore.

The forward attempted one shot, which was blocked, failed to complete his two attempted dribbles and recorded zero key passes.

Guessand was hardly involved in the Lions' play, completing just six passes after spending more than an hour on the pitch.

The attacker was scrappy on the ball, losing possession 12 times.

Without the ball, the former Nice player didn't do much either, winning just one of his six ground duels and one of his two aerial duels.

Monchi was still the B6 club's sporting director when Guessand moved to Villa Park, but Emery must surely have been involved in conversations to sign him, and now has some serious explaining to do.

Villa seem to have already replaced Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers after signing Gomes, Johan Manzambi and Alejandro Garnacho.

There's still plenty of positions the Villans might need to strengthen in the coming weeks.

Ezri Konsa has developed into a quality centre-back and it wouldn't be surprising to see a top team make an offer for him soon.

Lucas Digne is expected to join Paris Saint-Germain and a deputy left-back will certainly be needed to cover for Ian Maatsen.

Boubacar Kamara's injury record means the Villans should be looking for further midfield reinforcements, with Amadou Onana also expected to be out for a while.

Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham may also need more competition up front as Emery prepares for another Champions League campaign in B6.
