Newcastle and Aston Villa's summer transfer spend compared so far
Aston Villa and Newcastle are set for an interesting match-up in their opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League season on 16 August.
Over their last six encounters, the two teams have scored 25 goals between them, with Unai Emery mostly getting the better of Eddie Howe's side.
Last season, Newcastle won the first encounter 3-0, before Villa got revenge at Villa Park in a 4-1 win in April.
Aston Villa and the Geordies have had an intriguing battle off the pitch this summer, with Howe looking to poach players from his rivals.
Newcastle have spent £50million more than Villa this summer
Both Newcastle and Aston Villa have endured tough transfer windows so far as they continue to tow the line with Profit and Sustainability rules.
The Villans have been resigned to trying to tie down their best players, while the Geordies have faced a battle to keep Alexander Isak at St James' Park.
Should Isak leave, Howe's side could make a move for Ollie Watkins.
The Magpies are already targeting Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn as they look to sign a fifth player this summer.
Howe has spent £86million so far this summer, £52million of that has gone on signing Anthony Elanga, and £30million on AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

Villa's transfer business has had to be a lot more shrewd.
The Villans have prioritised extending current players' contracts after missing out on the likes of Sverre Nypan due to being outbid.
Emery completed the signings of Marco Bizot as a backup goalkeeper, young defender Yasin Ozcan for £6million, and Evann Guessand for £26million.
The Villans have also extended the contract of Boubacar Kamara and explored the possibility of extending Ramsey's contract before a move away became a possibility.
Aston Villa to get the better of Newcastle again
Emery has won five and lost three of the games he has managed against Howe.
Given Newcastle's transfer instabilities and that they are scrambling to sign more players, Villa can take advantage.
In contrast, the Villans are fairly comfortable in sitting back and trying to stop any approaches for their players.
With the home advantage on their side, Villa could condemn the Magpies to another crushing defeat.
