Joao Gomes could be set to play a key role for Aston Villa against Club Brugge on Tuesday.

There was plenty of positively surrounding the Brazilian after his summer move from Wolves.

His pre-season performances certainly caught the eye as he became a true sweeper in the heart of midfield in claret and blue.

That continued into the Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain where he made a positive impact on his competitive debut.

Unfortunately, the midfielder blew it on the opening day of the Premier League against Brighton.

Gomes is now set to return to action for Villa against Club Brugge in the Champions League, and he could be in for a key role.

The summer signing was sent off away to the Seagulls after a shocking debut came to a quick end.

His kick out on Georginio Rutter was ridiculous and was certainly deserving of a red card just eight minutes after his error directly led to Jack Hinshelwood's second of the day.

Gomes has been missing ever since due to suspension, but can feature against Club Brugge.

Many of questioned whether he will come straight back into Unai Emery's side or not.

Villa appear to have pointed towards him making an immediate return with their pre-match post to X.

Their Tuesday post features John McGinn, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia, all behind the Brazilian front-and-centre.

That could be a hint that the ex-Wolves man could be set to come straight back in away at Jan Breydelstadion.

What impact could Gomes make vs Club Brugge?

The Brighton defeat has certainly clouded what had been a positive start for the summer signing.

His pre-season form had been excellent and was certainly spoiled away at the Amex.

He did manage a 100 per cent pass accuracy against the Seagulls and managed to put up seven defensive contributions in just 40 minutes of action.

His six duel wins is also a plus, especially after winning three against PSG.

Gomes got into three tackles in the Super Cup as he looked largely comfortable up against Joao Gomes, Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery.

All that could see him make a telling impact against Club Brugge as Villa go in search of their first goal and win of the season.
