Lucas Bergvall would bring trait Unai Emery loves to Aston Villa – here’s why

Aston Villa are reportedly planning to test Tottenham’s resolve over Lucas Bergvall this summer.

That’s according to a report from The Daily Mail, who claim that Aston Villa alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea are plotting moves for Bergvall when the transfer market re-opens in June.

Tottenham are in complete disarray under Igor Tudor, which was compounded by their 5-2 humiliation at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Spurs are just one point above the relegation zone, and could well be playing their football in the Championship next season, which would inevitably see a major overhaul to the playing squad this summer.

Bergvall could be included in that, as the 20-year-old is one of the Lilywhites’ brightest young talents, with only injuries preventing him from playing a larger role in N17 this term.

Why Unai Emery would love Lucas Bergvall at Aston Villa

Unai Emery is a highly tactical coach, and one that loves his players – especially in midfield and forward areas – to be versatile and able to play across a number of different roles and positions.

The Villa Park faithful have seen him do so with the likes of Morgan Rogers to great success, with the England international routinely being shifted from a central attacking midfield role to out wide under him.

As such, one of the first main reasons why Emery would love to have Bergvall in his Villans side is his versatility, with the Swede capable of operating anywhere across the midfield.

Six, eight 10 or out on the left flank, Bergvall can and has played all of these roles during his Spurs career, and with strength in depth being a major issue this season, he could be invaluable in terms of filling in across numerous areas.

However, there is another part of Bergvall’s game that Emery would really love: his dribbling.

As per Sofascore, Bergvall is registering a 70 per cent dribble success rate in the Premier League this season, which would be music to the Villa boss’ ears.

Emery places a high value on his midfielders and forwards being strong dribblers and carriers of the ball, with the likes of Rogers, Emi Buendia, Ollie Watkins, Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans all excellent in this department.

Because of this, Bergvall would fit into Emery’s system like a glove, and so it’s no surprise to see Villa reportedly looking into acquiring his signature.

What is Bergvall’s contract situation at Tottenham?

Luckily for Tottenham, they are in a very strong position regarding Bergvall’s contract heading into the summer.

The midfielder penned a five-year contract extension in April 2025, ensuring he’s tied down in N17 until 2031.

As such, Bergvall certainly won’t be leaving on the cheap this summer if Tottenham decide to cash in, or are indeed given no option but to sell if they are relegated to the Championship.

That could present a problem for Villa, especially if Chelsea are indeed also sniffing around his signature, as the Villans are facing well-documented PSR and UEFA financial problems which limits their spending power.
