Jadon Sancho dreadful, Morgan Rogers talismanic again – Aston Villa player ratings vs Lille
Aston Villa secured a much-needed 1-0 win away to Lille on Wednesday.
The Villans travelled to the Decathlon Stadium ready for the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash with a familiar opponent.
Unai Emery’s side secured a penalty shootout victory against the Ligue 1 outfit back in 2024 and were on the winning trail two years later.
Ollie Watkins netted the only goal of the night with a superbly smart header to lob Berke Ozer from nearly the edge of the box.
That was enough for the claret and blue outfit to secure a win, and now, Villa News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.
Jadon Sancho struggles again for Aston Villa
There have been some flashes of excellence from the Manchester United loanee this season, but away to Lille didn’t show any positive signs.
The Englishman was largely poor and didn’t show any reason why Emery should be starting him more regularly in B6.
Sancho featured down the right but was unable to prove himself, with a 50 per cent dribble success rate and no completed crosses, not painting a great picture.
He was also dispossessed once and dribbled past once, just as many times as he was caught offside for the away side.
Not a good night for the 25-year-old.
Morgan Rogers the star man vs Lille
There has been a desperate need for Rogers to stand up and be counted in recent weeks, and he certainly did so away to Lille.
His dazzling feet were simply sensational at times, and they left the home side chasing shadows in and around the penalty area.
The England international created two chances and also took three shots of his own as he looked to make things happen going forward.
He supplemented that with one successful dribble, one cross and a 100 per cent long ball accuracy away on the continent.
The Villans’ performance may not have been classic, but there were certainly some parts of Rogers’ game to keep everyone talking.
