WSL returns: Everything fans need to know as Aston Villa Women look to bounce back to form
Aston Villa Women are looking to return to form as the Women’s Super League returns this coming weekend.
The WSL was put on hold last month ahead of the ongoing international break, while clubs also dealt with European and FA Cup commitments.
Natalia Arroyo’s side lost five consecutive matches leading up to the pause, heading into it after a devastating 7-3 loss against Tottenham at Villa Park.
With the break coming at the right time for Aston Villa, they are looking to return to form as domestic action resumes on Sunday.
Tottenham horror show leaves Aston Villa searching for form
Ahead of the break, Villa’s dismal form continued as Martin Ho’s side thrashed the Villans 7-3.
A brace from Kirsty Hanson and a deflected strike from Oriane Jean-Francois were not enough against the ruthless Lilywhites.
Spaniard Arroyo remains in post for the league’s return, after telling Express & Star “it’s not something I can answer” when asked about her future following the heavy defeat.

Villa remain clear of relegation trouble, though 16 points from 16 matches leaves them in search of nine points in their remaining six if they are to match last season’s tally.
Things don’t get much easier either, with runaway league leaders Manchester City coming to Villa Park on Sunday, before the more favourable clash with Leicester is followed up by a trip to Chelsea.
However, Arroyo’s side need points desperately if they are to avoid a dismal end to the season.
Tough run of fixtures could bring an end to Natalia Arroyo’s tenure
As mentioned, things do not get any easier for Villa heading into the season’s final weeks.
With six matches remaining, Arroyo’s side face just two sides currently sitting behind them in the WSL standings – Leicester and West Ham.
Aston Villa Women’s remaining WSL fixtures:
- Manchester City – 15 March (H)
- Leicester City – 22 March (A)
- Chelsea – 29 March (A)
- Arsenal – 26 April (H)
- West Ham – 3 May (H)
- London City Lionesses – 16 May (A)
After returning from the winter break with a win against Brighton, Villa have went through a serious dip in form, causing Arroyo’s job to be at risk.
With a tough run remaining for the Villans, the Spaniard could well be in line to be replaced following the end of the season, unless a sensational turnaround is to be sparked, starting with champions-elect Manchester City on Sunday.
